    • @FishBumpTV

      I would sand the waxed surface with 80 grit, then wipe down with acetone. The wax will affect the ability of the gelcoat to bond if it isn't removed. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Captain Joe, if you're applying a laminating resin and fiberglass mat over an already gel coated surface that is many months or years old i.e. fully cured, would you sand the gel coat to create a keyed surface for mechanical adhesion of the new resin, or would you remove the gel coat entirely and take the surface back to the last layer of mat and resin? Basically, is it necessary to remove the gel coat or is roughing it up with 60 or 80 grit sufficient to get a good bond? I would think that leaving the gel coat on would result in three failure interfaces whereas removing the gel coat only creates one. Thanks so much for any help.

    • @fiberglassguru
      @fiberglassguru 2 дні тому

      I would take it back to the fiberglass if I wanted to add a structural layer to the laminate. You are correct in your thinking that the gel coat layer would create failure point.

    • @mcmxillc6138
      @mcmxillc6138 2 дні тому

      @@fiberglassguru Thanks for the response. It's not a structural layer since I'm building up the recessed center section of a Robalo console so that I can add dual displays, which can't currently be installed due to not having a large enough flat mounting surface. But even though it's not structural, I still want to do a professional job, hence my question. I'm now thinking that removing the gel coat is the way to go even though it's not a structural modification.

    • @fiberglassguru
      @fiberglassguru 2 дні тому

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV День тому

      I typically remove the gelcoat, or at least the majority of it if possible,24 or 36 grit on a high speed grinder will get the job done for you. The rough grit paper will give you a good mechanical bond. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    • @fiberglassguru
      @fiberglassguru 3 дні тому

      What type of foam? With foam, the fiberglass doesn't really matter, but the resin does. And for kayaks, a 6 oz plain weave cloth is typically used. Polyurethane foam can take epoxy or polyester resin. EPS foam needs epoxy.

      @@hsertaw9918 With the pink EPS foam, you will need epoxy and 6 oz cloth. Fiberglass Warehouse has both of those.

      6 Oz finishing cloth is the most popular type for that application. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    If the base ware super smooth would you see the roller marks or does the gel coat become smooth as on ”new” boats

      A roller is going to leave some texture, even if the base is very smooth. You can roll, then tip the gelcoat with a brush to get a smoother finish. You could also thin the gelcoat with a clear air dry additive then spray it for a glossy finish. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    When sanding, does it start getting “easier” or whatever? Basically when sanding how do you know if your through the oxidation? Do you look at the color of the water coming off?

    If I missed it I’m sorry, why now wax on every coat, will the additional coats not stick?

    • @FishBumpTV
      @FishBumpTV 3 дні тому

      Wax added to the gelcoat makes the surface tack free and waxy. That makes it difficult for following coats to bond. Only add wax on the last coat, or expect to have to sand the surface for a good bond. Thanks for watching

    I feel your info is very important to the overall project--you folks appear to do Custom boatbuilding rather than Production building--therin lies the fact that you are giving out more information to do a much more thorough job than a production shop that cuts so many corners to Get The Product Out the Door! But as you have stated , your videos are longer--because there is so much more information. I tend to demonstrate the same problem in trying to teach the skills necessary. Not wanting to lose the Attention Span of the student/viewer is the Challenge. Good Videos!-----Mikey, Belfair, Wa
